Character Appreciation Post- Peggy Carter

Note: This is a 2 year old post. Unfortunately, Agent Carter has since been cancelled. However, my appreciation of the character remains and thus, when I happened across this post, I knew I had to publish it. Enjoy!

It’s 2015 and women in all fields have come far. Most people are progressive enough to look beyond gender as a factor and we are, in many ways moving towards a gender neutral society where we avoid judging a person for being different.

Agent Carter is a 1946 based period television show. Things were rather different back then. Those were better times, simpler times. Well, if you were a white heterosexual male. Otherwise, well-

Ability be damned.

Peggy Carter is a soldier, war veteran and hero all in her own right. And yet after the war, she’s rather disillusioned with her life stateside. Inspite of being a full time agent of the Strategic Scientific Research(SSR) her workload pretty much only includes taking the lunch orders, bringing coffee, manning the phones or filing the paperwork at best. She’s treated as an assistant instead of an agent.

A lesser woman would’ve given up. Made her peace with her stock in life. But not Peggy Carter. No. She takes life by the horns and deals with chauvinist colleagues and villains with equal wit, charm and badassery (that’s the scientific word for awesomesauceness)

It’s women like her who’ve made life easier for us in the present. She fights for respect and equality in an unfair world where her ability or skills aren’t what people see when they look at her.

She isn’t afraid to fight for what she thinks is right and is loyal to her friends and empathetic towards everyone, including her detractors.

Isn’t that the very definition of a hero?

Someone who can look beyond personal grudges and see and nurture the good in everyone.

Someone who upholds justice and peace, no matter the personal cost.

Peggy Carter is a woman who knows loss and pain all too well.

And yet, she hasn’t lost hope. She gets up in the morning hoping to make the world a better place, even if the world refuses to change.

She doesn’t do it for the glory, the money, the fancy ass costumes or the awe. She knows her value and doesn’t need people to sing songs or write of her exploits, she does it to know that she did good today. That she made herself proud.

But that isn’t the only thing that makes our girl a hero.

The thing that really made this character a hero in my eyes is that she isn’t infallible.

She stumbles, makes mistakes and sometimes she even forgets her value, who she is and what she is capable of.

We don’t just see the perfect hero, fighting the bad guys and saving the day…

We see the woman underneath, who just wants to be treated as a peer by her colleagues, who wants to grieve her lover’s death without having to seem strong, who sometimes forgets her value. We see the woman who cares deeply and genuinely about everything.

Peggy is more than a mask.

She is human.

And for me, that makes her one of the greatest heroes. She’s focused, driven, immaculate, badass but at the same time she’s kind, and immensely protective of those she calls her own and she makes mistakes.

She isn’t invincible. She doesn’t have super-anything.

But that doesn’t stop her from being a hero.

She rises to every occasion and I’m glad that ABC has renewed ‘Agent Carter’ because Peggy deserves it.

She makes me proud to be a woman and I’m so glad she was brought to life on our screens.

P.S. I’m pretty sure articles don’t actually have P.S.’s but this is important. I love the character but I think Hayley Atwell deserves a special shoutout. She has taken this one-off side role and turned into something amazing along with the entire Agent Carter crew. Kudos.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Review

This book. Oh god this book. They say if it ain’t broken don’t fix it and if it’s already perfect don’t touch it. This was incredibly applicable to the world of Harry Potter. I’m not against sequels as such, but the danger of a bad sequel is that it risks ruining the original. In many ways, Harry Potter and the cursed child ruined canon and for this grave crime it cannot be forgiven. More than any other problem I had with the book, I hate that it felt kind of…pointless. We could have done without this book. It did not add to the magical world of Hogwarts, did not add depth to the characters we have loved for so many years. In this cruel sci-fi version of Harry Potter and why nobody should mess with the timeline(looking at you Barry Allen) we enter a magical world of Harry being a terrible father, Ron still being an inept idiot, Ginny being practically non existent and Hermione…who am I kidding! Even this book couldn’t ruin the literal perfection that is Hermione Granger!
Oh also, Voldy with no nose has a daughter and you can’t get a fucking text back. So there’s that. Cheers to us friendzone dumb dumbs who can’t take a hint and cheers to our creepy hag sister Bellatrix Lestrange who managed to fulfill her noseless fetish with the Dark Lord. Also, I have questions that nobody else wants to ask. What did she call him in bed?Dark Lord? Sir? Voldy? He who must not be named? Tom? Or did she just stick to Oh God? Was there pillow talk? Is there going to be a prequel called “Harry Potter and Fifty Shades of Grey” Are we going to have to hear from Bellatrix’s “inner goddess” because I swear to the dark lord the logistics of Voldy’s sex life are so much more interesting than this book. Like did he not lose his penis with his nose?(as one would assume) Did the dementors make Bellatrix loco enough to think Voldy was hot? Or plot twist is Bellatrix better than us all and value “inner beauty” the most? I need answers goddamnit!

Okay okay, that was one tangent too many. Back to the book that exists. It wasn’t all bad. Hermione is Minister of Magic, The magical community is peaceful and has healed, Draco seems kinda nice, his son is adorable and there may be a Granger-Weasley-Malfoy wedding in the future. Yeah but that’s about it. The rest is an insult. Harry’s son is whinier than dear old dad, Ron and Ginny are just kinda..there, Dumbledore is a stoner painting who keeps running away (possibly because he wanted nothing to do with this book), Harry has daddy issues he has passed on, the lessons we learned about not judging Slytherin come completely undone(which as a possible Slytherin I take great offense to), instead of being brave and having Voldemorts daughter be a good guy or a friend who goes bad, they made it pretty obvious from the very beginning that there was something off about ‘Delphi’. The ENTIRE point of the book was, no joke, how terrible it is to manipulate time and how everything happens for a reason and how the definitely not gay children(there’s quite a bit of gaybaiting though) of Harry and Draco try to save Cedric Diggory aka Edward Cullen. Basically something they most definitely covered in book 3 “Prisoner Of Azkaban” and book 4 “Goblet of Fire” Do yourself a favor and re-read that.

Consider yourself warned.

Moving On

My memories were my one true friend

But now even they betray me;

Reminding me of sweeter times

When we were partners in all our crimes.

I hoped we wouldn’t see this day

But what is it they say?

Oh yes

This too shall pass.

Your presence will be erased

Your spot taken by another

And all we once had will lie

In a corner

All but

About that President

I am and will always be a huge Hillary Clinton fan. However, the American election results today have not just declared a win for Mr. Trump they have sent a message to the clearly biased media, politicians who have no intention of fighting terror, instead choosing to have an apologetic white guilt attitude for vote banks, the closed off system where the common man can never be President and where people are sick of hearing lies. Hillary Clinton didn’t lose to Trump. She lost to a tired common man who just wants the truth. Instead the media made life hell for anyone who even thought of voting Republican, calling them racist, bigots, anti lgbt even if all they may have been is someone who just didn’t want the same crap for another 4 years. Maybe they wanted to know why they should vote Democrat instead of why they shouldn’t vote Trump. Trump took advantage of this and swayed the common man. He promised that he wouldn’t be like the rest of the club in Washington. Everyone saw the same weird, orange, egotistic, chauvinistic dick he is but that’s exactly what worked. The veneer of perfection and pristine “greatness” has lost its charm in America and around the world. They want someone who’s anti establishment, anti terror. Personally as a long time Hillary supporter I felt her loss today. But it’s a new day for India-US ties which have always suffered under the Clintons. It’s a huge loss for the biased media, and hopefully terror. America has spoken. President Trump it is.

Lost Hope

It eats at me in silence

A little more everyday

Until one day I am no more

Than an empty husk inside

This silence in me is jarring

And there’s nothing I can do

Because what can one do?

When all you care about is gone?

And the light at the end of the tunnel

Is naught to be seen

When the loneliness hits

And the emptiness makes itself known

When life seems like nothing

But Lost Hope.

Cause and effect

People in this country do not seem to understand cause and effect. Every action you take or words you speak have an effect, a response. They expect that they will spout their opinions, make statements that have enormous implications and will suffer no backlash. This isn’t about religion, politics or economics. No. This is about cause and effect. The most popular of Newton’s laws. ‘Every action will have an equal and opposite reaction’ Remember this law. Tattoo it on your forehead. Understand that everytime you say or do something there will be consequences, regardless of your intentions. That is why ‘think before you speak/act’ is imbibed in us from a young age. This responsibility increases a hundred fold when you have some pull in society. This pull may be in the form of money, power or fame. India is not insulated from the world. When you say things like this country is inhabitable, violent and intolerant, the world watches. The world judges. They do not, and will not know the ground reality, but will come to the conclusion that somehow in the short term of this new regime, India has let go of 1000’s of years of unity. Forget the world stage. In India itself, these irresponsible statements have manufactured a sense of disharmony and fear. So yes, if India has had enough, if India wants to show its displeasure via peaceful protest and rant like tweets and facebook posts, it isn’t intolerance. It is a response. It is cause and effect. Jai Hind.

(*Written during the manufactured intolerance debate in India, after Aamir Khan’s offense statements about India and the subsequent boycott of Snapdeal and the products he endorsed at the time.)

A gentle breeze told me of your presence
As did the violins playing all around
A sad tune or merry they play;
I cannot say
I cannot say
Yesterday I said, tomorrow I will cease to care
About how you fare
But today I see you
With those jokes that flow so easy
And that smile which promises to beguile ….and you look at me with those eyes bewitching
That I lie there helpless
under that gaze, twitching
Saying I’ll get over you tomorrow.
All the while knowing,
tomorrow never comes.

Love me.
Never leave.
Through sickness and health may we be bound.
As partners and friends and lovers.
As we come together
I want you to know
You have monopoly over my heart.
I think of you wherever I go
Without you perhaps I cannot function
For where there’s you there’s me
Seems obvious
You have monopoly over my soul.
You are mine and I yours.
We share. We fight. We love.
Just know my love, my treasure trove
You have monopoly over my heart.
Death itself cannot do us apart
For after all,we had a headstart.
I’m head over heels
Heart over mind
Rest assured I will follow you
from heaven to hell
For my love
You have monopoly over my soul.
Its you!
Its you!
Always was. The one in my heart
On my mind
Etched in my soul.
Forever will you have

Commercials. The very word brings various thoughts to mind.Boring,irritating….the break in the middle of our favorite T.V soap is not appreciated, but at the same time, advertisements are a part of the lucrative media business.A lot of effort is taken to make commercials appealing to various age groups. But why? do they really affect our decisions about the products?the answer, for me personally, is YES.The slogans, the people, the colours used in commercials all matter, and make the advertising business what it is and what it should be-an art!
However commercials nowadays, are disappointing to say the least.Writers do not use their creativity and wit, choosing instead to depend on star power…thus undermining themselves as well as their audience. They choose to think that just because the Shahrukh Khans and Katrina Kaifs of Bollywood claim to use their products, every Tom,Dick and Harry would suddenly be interested in using them too! They do not stop to think of whether the audience would prefer instead a witty, quirky dialogue for their product said by a completely unknown face. I do not have anything against using a known, trusted face, but to completely depend on this particular highly paid celebrity,to mouth a few rehearsed lines is becoming the advertising business’s undoing…
Some commercials though are commendable. In particular,I like Idea commercials.Abhishek B acchan utters the epic dialogue “What an Idea Sirji!” after every one of their creative advertisements in an uber cool way, with classic ease and elan.Another favorite would be the pepsi ads in which they spoofed the thumbs up ad with not so much subtlety…..It won my heart forever!!
So I truly believe that commercials are double edged swords, due to which, prospective customers can be lost as well as gained…The quality of the product comes as an afterthought to many.As for me,I would love to be hit with a series of smart, fresh commercials, which would make it difficult to decide what exactly to buy..!
